Theory of Change

Description:

This animated video introduces the Humanitarian Academy’s Theory of Change (ToC) Model, a foundational framework designed to explain how the organization achieves deep and lasting social impact through its programs and interventions. The ultimate goal is to enable people to be better prepared for and respond effectively to crises in their own countries.

The ToC model outlines three critical, interconnected pathways to achieve this change:

  1. Strengthening Individuals: Focusing on providing accessible learning content and targeted support initiatives to help humanitarians—at any stage of their career—grow into confident and skilled leaders. This pathway is designed to lead to more sustainable careers and consistent engagement in humanitarian work, empowering local humanitarians to take the lead.

  2. Strengthening Networks of Local Organizations: Working to ensure that local organizations can access vital organizational development and learning opportunities. The outcome is a vibrant, interactive network of organizations with clear policies and processes, allowing them to play a greater, more influential role in the wider humanitarian system.

  3. Strengthening the Humanitarian System: Bringing together diverse humanitarian actors to advocate for better policies, practices, and improved access to funding for learning. This will lead to the emergence of a new humanitarian system where all actors engage strategically and embed continuous learning into their work.

The video emphasizes that none of these pathways can be pursued in isolation; real, long-term impact requires all actors to communicate and work in partnership to create the right environment for systemic change. It concludes by noting that the ToC is an evolving hypothesis, continually informed by research and challenged by the rapidly changing humanitarian context.
